To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Tuxedo talented London College of Fashion BA (Hons) Bespoke Tailoring students teamed up with internationally renowned Savile Row tailor Henry Poole & Co and luxury fabric supplier Dormeuil to re-invent the Tuxedo for the 21st century.
This extraordinary project - which had support from the Tuxedo Historical Society in Tuxedo Park, New York, where the black jacket acquired its name - paired the students with rising stars from the Drama Centre at LCF's sister college Central Saint Martin's to create tailor made Tuxedos. The design process was captured by a behind the scenes documentary and a stunningly visual black and white fashion short.
As well as creating bespoke Tuxedos, London College of Fashion commissioned a publication by bringing together high profile faces from its extensive network of supporters, including Chairman of the British Fashion Council Harold Tillman CBE (himself an LCF tailoring alumnus) who endorsed the project as a "perfect example of some of the finest British craftsmanship."
Other fashion industry stalwarts who were shot for the publication in their favourite Tuxedos, include supermodel Marie Helvin, musician Mr Hudson, design director of Topman Gordon Richardson, jeweller and sponsor of Tuxedo Robert Tateossian, footwear designer and LCF alumna Beatrix Ong MBE, Fashion and Beauty Director of Harrods Marigay McKee and Angus and Simon Cundey of Henry Poole & Co.
The publication and the tailor made tuxedos were launched at an exclusive VIP Black Tie event on 7 September 2011 at the HQ of project partner Quintessentially, the world's leading private members' club with a global concierge service.
In the build up to the announcement of the overall winner of the competition in New York later this year the designs will start a world tour which will launch concurrently at Harrods and the Burlington Arcade in London on 13 September 2011. Visitors will be able to discover more about the history of this very British style icon - a garment that effortlessly sums up traditional values of Britishness, excellence, fashion and sophisticated style - from its invention by Henry Poole and Co in Savile Row in 1860 to the legendary status that is has today.
The exhibition will then to travel to New York where it will be displayed at the Tuxedo Historical Society from 9 October - 4 November 2011.
Professor Frances Corner OBE, Head of College at London College of Fashion who has also been photographed in a specially designed Tuxedo, commented, "Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Tuxedo has been a wonderful and valuable opportunity for students from different disciplines and courses - from design and styling to film and photography - to collaborate with industry and other colleges within University of the Arts London. This project has already attracted extraordinary interest in the UK and overseas which illustrates the iconic power of the Tuxedo."
With a huge resurgent interest in menswear and tailoring, this Autumn's Tuxedo tour is the perfect opportunity to celebrate this most British of style icons.
