Our congratulations go to Kathryn Sargent, who has become the first female tailor to open a bespoke tailoring house on Savile Row.
The Associate Member of the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) opened for business at number 37 Savile Row on Wednesday, becoming the first female name ‘above the door’ in the 213-year history of tailoring on our famous street.
It is another first for Kathryn, who became the first female head cutter on Savile Row in 2009 when she was employed by SRBA founding member Gieves & Hawkes.
The Savile Row shop will serve as a sister establishment to Kathryn’s established atelier on Brook Street and will also cater to both male and female clients.
“I am delighted to be opening a shop on Savile Row,” says Kathryn. “As a tailor it has been a long held ambition of mine, and throughout my career, I have upheld the excellent values of Savile Row. I am thrilled to be making history, although for me being a woman is incidental: I am a tailor first and foremost.”
William Skinner, chairman of the SRBA and managing director of SRBA stalwart Dege & Skinner commented: “It is fitting that the first woman to be appointed as a head cutter on Savile Row is returning to open a shop of her own and is testament to the continued appeal of Savile Row as the sartorial home of high quality, hand-crafted tailoring.”
