Happy Birthday Richard James

Congratulations from everyone at the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) go to our founding member Richard James, which is celebrating its twenty-fifth birthday and twenty-five years on our celebrated street.

Co-founded by designer Richard James and his business partner Sean Dixon, Richard James opened its doors at the very small 37a Savile Row in late1992. The company has since made great strides and now occupies the largest premises on Savile Row at number 29, as well as having another store devoted to bespoke tailoring (pictured) directly opposite at 19 Clifford Street.

Richard James is known as a modernizing presence on Savile Row and is widely credited with having done much to make the name of our street synonymous with men’s style and fashion as well as working to ensure it remains a byword for the best bespoke tailoring in the world.

In its twenty-five year history the company has won both the British Fashion Council’s Menswear Designer of the Year and Bespoke Designer of the Year Awards, which were awarded for its ready-to-wear menswear and bespoke tailoring respectively. Richard James is known throughout the world for its fashion-led ready-to-wear collections, but it has also produced bespoke Savile Row tailoring since the first day it opened.

The next stop for Richard James is New York, where it is opening a shop that will showcase both its ready-to-wear and bespoke tailoring on Park Avenue in January. Long-time customer and real estate developer and film producer Charles S. Cohen took a majority stake in the company in 2017 and assumed the role of chairman, immediately announcing plans to expand the business in the United States.

Says Richard James Managing Director and co-founder Sean Dixon: “We’re very excited about New York and our future with Charles, but Savile Row will remain our base and spiritual home. One big, very important reason why we opened our first store on the Row in 1992 was because the quality of the tailoring produced on the street fitted perfectly with our plan to produce classic, impeccably made clothing with a design edge. Savile Row will always stand for quality and it’s a name and place we’re proud to be associated with.”
