The cameras have returned to Savile Row.
Following on from Somi Arian’s film The Bespoke Process, which she made for our own website, Finnish journalist, scriptwriter and audiovisual producer Markus Palmen has been filming at Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) member Chittleborough & Morgan.
Markus was tasked with finding a suitable subject to demonstrate intergenerational learning in London by EPALE, the European Commission sponsored Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe, a content sharing platform for adult learning professionals which promotes good working practice.
Tailoring and quality craftsmanship have always interested Markus, partly because of a family connection: his great-grandfather was a master tailor, operating his own shop and guiding several apprentices in turn-of-the century Finland.
So he immediately thought of Savile Row as a setting for his film, where the art and craft of bespoke tailoring has long been handed down from master to apprentice, a tradition that is underpinned by the SRBA Apprenticeship Scheme.
“I arranged an interview at short notice with Chittleborough & Morgan, who were very open and welcoming,” says Markus. “Shooting the video was a true learning experience for me as well: I learned a lot about bespoke tailoring, a lot of which I was unable to include in the finished edit.”
