Below the Row

Below the Row, the fascinating short documentary that takes a rare look at the very special relationship between a coatmaker and his young apprentice at Henry Poole & Co, can now be seen by all on Vimeo.

For apprentice James Weir, the immaculate working practises and craftsmanship that Henry Poole has become renowned for since its founding in 1806 represent an approach to life that he was unable to find elsewhere. He is trained by the softly spoken Paul Frearson, a coatmaker for 40 years, who clearly takes great pride in passing on his craft to someone he considers to be a more than worthy successor.

So named because it takes the viewer into the lower-ground floor work rooms at Henry Poole, Below the Row was produced by four students at the University of the Creative Arts at Farnham, Surrey, as a part of their degree in Film Production. Funding came from the students themselves, private investors and £400 each from Henry Poole and the Savile Row Bespoke Association.

The same talented crew of Glen Travis (Director), Rebecca Dale-Everett (Producer), Jason Bourke-Velji (Cinematography) and Joseph Russell (Sound Recording and Design) have just launched an online fundraising campaign for their latest film The Happy Warriors, about the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team.

Below the Row has been entered into a number of film festivals throughout the world, winning the IMDB New Filmmaker’s award at Bath Film Festival last year, and has done much to showcase the unique craft of bespoke tailoring on Savile Row.
