Dominic Dormeuil’s stunning In Search of the World’s Finest Wools is now available from Dormeuil in English and Amazon in French.

Illustrated throughout with beautiful photography by Jean-Baptiste Rabouan, the books serves as both an indispensable guide to the finest wool available throughout the world and a paean to the remarkable commodity without which any tailor’s job would be all but impossible.

The idea for the book came to Mr Dormeuil, who is the fifth-generation family President of Savile Row Bespoke Association member Dormeuil, when he was visiting Mongolia and it features every fine fibre Dormeuil has found and used in its illustrious 174-year history.

The reader is introduced to the fascinatingly disparate cultures and traditions of wool-producing communities of every continent and meets the farmers and shepherds that care for the animals that produce the raw wool that is woven into the cloth that is celebrated internationally, not least in our own community on Savile Row.

The many regions explored include:

Greenland – The home of Oiviut, the extremely precious wool of the musk ox. This is considered to be the rarest wool in the world and has a thermal quality eight times that of sheep’s wool.

Kyrgyzstan – The home of Taewit goat wool, which has an incomparable lightness and was only discovered by the wider world after the fall of the USSR.

Scotland – The home of Shetland sheep wool. Its remarkable wind and moisture resistance is widely attributed to the average 250 days of coastal wind and rain that the Shetland islands experience every year.
