100 And Counting

We are thrilled to announce that over one-hundred apprentices have now been trained in the craft of bespoke tailoring on our celebrated street since the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) was founded in 2004.

From its inception, the overarching remit of the SRBA has been to protect and promote the unique craft of bespoke Savile Row tailoring. And nothing is more important to ensure that than training the next generation of cutters, tailors and other specialist craftspeople that produce it.

Just a decade ago, the average age of a tailor on Savile Row was over 60. Today, this has dropped substantially to 40, and it is continuing to fall.

Since 2007, 104 young people have trained with SRBA members and become bona-fide Savile Row cutters and tailors. The retention rate of qualified apprentices by our members is estimated at 85%, and many apprentices have started their own bespoke tailoring businesses.

Savile Row has become a more equal and inclusive community too. Women are increasingly prominent in tailoring roles on the street and its confines, and many have become front-of-house cutters, measuring-up and designing garments, and managing client relations.

The SRBA has also been instrumental in developing national qualifications to support the craft of bespoke tailoring throughout the United Kingdom.
