Tickets are available to buy now for this year’s Golden Shears awards ceremony, which takes place at the splendid Merchant Taylors’ Hall on Monday 17th March.
Known as the The Oscars of the Tailoring World, the Golden Shears was founded in 1974 and is open to all tailoring students and apprentices in the United Kingdom. This year there are twenty-five entrants in total, ten of whom are serving apprenticeships with tailors on the Row, Savile Row Bespoke Association members amongst them, and fifteen who are currently studying at university or college.
This year's students come from The London Academy of Bespoke, London College of Fashion, Wimbledon College of Art, Sunderland University, The Tailoring Academy (Macclesfield), University of Creative Arts (Epsom) and Ravensbourne University. The apprentices come from Huntsman, Henry Poole, Connock & Lockie, Maurice Sedwell, Fedro Gaudenzi, Whitcombe & Shaftesbury, Richard James and Anderson & Sheppard.
With an emphasis on sustainability in tailoring, this year’s awards will feature a catwalk show and a salon-style presentation in addition to the prize-giving ceremony. The entrants are marked for technical merit before being judged by a celebrity style panel.
This year's technical judges are Joe Morgan (Chittleborough & Morgan), Will Adams (Dunhill), Patrick Murphy (Davies & Son), Juan Carlos Benito (Monte Lys) and Brigitte Stepputtis (Vivienne Westwood).
The celebrity stye panel comprises Lisa Armstrong OBE (Head of Fashion at The Telegraph), Jo Hooper (Founder of NRBY Clothing and former Womenswear Director at Debenhams and John Lewis), Catherine Hayward (Fashion Editor and Creative Director), Stuart Trevor (fashion designer and founder of All Saints and Stuart Trevor designer streetwear), and Jayesh Vaghela (Master Hatter at Lock & Co. and the resident hatter on the BBC’s The Repair Shop).
The evening will be hosted by Nick Hewer.
The Golden Shears awards are supported by CAPITB Trust, The Drapers’ Company, The Merchant Taylors’ Company and The Pollen Estate.
