The very bright future of bespoke tailoring was on show for all to see at Monday’s Golden Shears awards at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall.
Congratulations from everyone at the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) go to each of the competition’s twenty-five finalists, not least Joanna Spreadbury (pictured, top) of SRBA member Huntsman, who scooped first prize, and Tilda Jonathan of the London College of Fashion and Kasia Hughes of Connock & Lockie, who finished in second and third places.
First prize: The Golden Shears and £3,000 to Joanna Spreadbury, Huntsman apprentice
Second prize: The Silver Shears and £2,500 to Tilda Jonathan, London College of Fashion student
Third prize: The Rising Star and £2,000 to Kasia Hughes, Connock & Lockie apprentice
Held every two years, the Golden Shears competition is open to fashion students and apprentice tailors. Entries are judged on technical and aesthetic merit.
This year's technical judges were Joe Morgan (Chittleborough & Morgan), Will Adams (Dunhill), Patrick Murphy (Davies & Son), Juan Carlos Benito (Monte Lys) and Brigitte Stepputtis (Vivienne Westwood).
And the celebrity stye panel comprised Lisa Armstrong OBE (Head of Fashion at The Telegraph), Jo Hooper (Founder of NRBY Clothing and former Womenswear Director at Debenhams and John Lewis), Catherine Hayward (Fashion Editor and Creative Director), Stuart Trevor (fashion designer and founder of All Saints and Stuart Trevor designer streetwear), and Jayesh Vaghela (Master Hatter at Lock & Co. and the resident hatter on the BBC’s The Repair Shop).
The evening was hosted by Nick Hewer and Simon Cundey, Managing Director of Henry Poole and Co.
